Universe / Space: Why Is It So Dark ?

From time to time we get chance to see the picture of space, sitting in our homes through different medias. And we must have noticed one particular thing....

The space it is pitch dark with  constellations, planets and stars shining here and there. I am pretty naive at Science.... One question used to bother me that there are lots of stars in the space but also the space is dark, whereas only a single sun lights this whole earth??

I kept pondering on this question. And from the little knowledge that I have I come to the conclusion that-- light to be seen should be reflected from the objects on which it falls, however, the space is empty and the lights from different stars won't get reflected, that's why the space is dark....

What do you think about my answer?

Can anyone give me a reasonable/logical answer?
